Make Your Breakfast Nook The Favorite Family Room

One of the most important rooms of any house is the breakfast nook. It beats out the dining room for family meals, impromptu get-togethers, and family bonding time. The casual atmosphere of the breakfast nook and the proximity to the kitchen, which is the hub of the home, makes this space a top priority.

Since it is such a heavily used area of the home, durability is key when selecting furnishings for this space. No high gloss finishes here! A distressed wood table is perfect for a breakfast nook for a busy family. There are imperfections that come with the table and allows for Mom and Dad to breathe a sigh of relief knowing there’s not much the kiddos can do to destroy the table.

A performance upholstery fabric is another must when selecting finishes for the breakfast nook. Performance fabrics are ideal for families—repels liquids, easily cleanable, a true “no fuss” fabric. Performance fabrics have come a long way since the Sunbrella canvas too. You aren’t limited to just an outdoor canvas type fabric- they can be soft and nubby, or full of pattern and style.

Sometimes, a floor plan doesn’t allow for a breakfast nook and that’s ok! A large kitchen island is a wonderful stand-in for that type of space and serves the same function… a spot where the kids can do homework, a place for a casual meal, and a gathering spot for the family before starting their day. For this, it’s all about the barstools. I always try to select a barstool that’s not too bulky and easy to pull in and out from the counter, and comfy enough to spend a little time in. Of course you guessed it—the stools must always be in a durable fabric and finish!
